Windows 8 Tips and Tricks:
Windows 8 Consumer Preview also provides users to take a screenshot with just one step. In older versions of Windows, users could take a screenshot by hitting the PrtScr, which then saves it to the Clipboard. However, in order to view and save that screenshot you had to have some kind of image view program. To take a screenshot of your desktop in Windows 8, all you have to do is hit the PrtScr key and the Windows key at the same time. By doing this, Windows saves the screenshot as a PNG file to the Pictures folder where it is labeled simply as Screenshot, with a sequential number.

Another Windows 8 trick is accessing Windows 8's new backup file tool, which is now called File History (known in older versions of Windows as Previous Versions). If you have an external hard drive or even a USB flash drive you can back up your files by pressing the Windows key and the W key at the same time and then type File History to access the feature.

BlackBerry struggles in the sea of advancements at MWC

BlackBerry struggles in the sea of advancements at MWC
BlackBerry struggles in the sea of advancements at MWC
Galaxyneon29 - According to Steve Levy, CEO of enterprise mobile app platform company Verivo, BlackBerry is still viewed as the safest by IT professionals. However, there’s been an increasing number of companies who are allowing employees to ‘BYOD’ or Bring your Own Device. If those running the IT department had their way, they would likely only support once device: the BlackBerry.
The problem is that those IT advocates really have no way to help push greater RIM adoption. Even though the company makes most of its revenue from smartphones, RIM did not announce anything new at MWC 2012, and there’s going to be a lot of pressure from manufacturers like Nokia this year who are trying to re-establish their global position. The increasing volume of Android devices and Apple’s stable position means RIM is likely only to fall behind.
Some of us expected RIM to unveil its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones, but now we know that’s not going to happen until late 2012. Until then, the BlackBerry 7 lineup, which was released last year, is the only thing the company can hawk. On the tablet front, RIM is selling the PlayBook in many cases at prices less than half of the launch at $500. Unless something dramatically changes, the PlayBook line looks destined to go the way of the TouchPad.
The only thing noteworthy at RIM’s MWC booth was the QNX-based Porsche Carrera 911 concept car. First demoed at CES, it’s meant to demonstrate the capabilities of QNX and future automotive applications. Inside are three PlayBooks, one for navigation (center console), while the other two are mounted on the back seats as media players. All three devices are networked, so you can control the rear content from the center console.
For those not in the know, QNX is already used by brands like Porsche, Audi, and BMW. It’s also is the basis for the PlayBook OS and the upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS. Unfortunately, this specific media-focused application of QNX is only a concept car. You can’t actually walk into a dealership and get a Carrera 911 all decked out with the following features (source: Cnet):
  • Voice recognition software that allows you to navigate to a location or open a Web site on your center console
  • Voice calls in stereo sound via Bose speakers
  • Video calling with PlayBook tablets in the back seat
  • NFC tags to connect your smartphone and navigation system via BlackBerry Bridge
  • Wireless 3G router in the dashboard provides Internet connectivity

Western Digital sells HDD manufacturing to Toshiba

Western Digital sells HDD manufacturing to Toshiba
Galaxyneon29 -  WD is required to drop specific assets to receive permission to finalize the acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST). The sale will allow Toshiba tomanufacture and sell 3.5-inch hard drives for desktop and consumer electronics applications and will help Toshiba to expand its near-line HDD business.
As part of the deal, WD will take over TSDT Thailand, Toshiba’s Thailand-based HDD production facilities. According to WD, TSDT manufactured hard drives, but was severely impacted by the Thailand flood and has not yet resumed production. Once the manufacturing capability is restored, WD intends to integrate TSDT’s property, facilities and employees in Thailand into its Thailand operations. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
According to IHS iSuppli, Western Digital shipped about 28.5 million hard drives in Q4 of 2011, significantly down from 57.8 million in Q3 2011. Including Hitachi GST’s shipments the company reached 45.7 million drives, which is still behind Seagate (excluding Samsung), which won the quarter with 46.9 million drives.

Identifying Resistor Values using iPhone’s Camera

Galaxyneon29 - Are you  color blind? Then it would be hard for you to recognize the resistor value while working on projects. Rich Olsan from nothinglabs developed a cool iPhone application for you guys which helps identifying the resistor values through its camera. All you need to do is install application on your iPhone and follow these steps.
“Using resistor ID is easy:
1. Take a photo of a 4-band resistor using the app
2. Drag the numbered bars over the corresponding resistor bands
3. Resistor Photo ID provides you with the resistance and tolerance of the resistor!
If for any reason Resistor Photo ID doesn’t detect the correct color for a band – you can easily override it”.
