Splashtop brings Windows 8 Metro Testbed to Apple's iPad

Galaxyneon-This has gotta be uncomfortable for the iPad. Now, Windows 8 tablet developers — or anyone, for that matter — can test their apps and play with the Microsoft’s Metro interface from within the confines of Apple’s ubiquitous tablet. The functionality is made possible by Splashtop, which is known for its remote desktop apps that are currently available for Android and iOS. It seems that a good amount of effort went into this application, known as the Win8 Metro Testbed, which offers the same swipe capabilities that will be available on a native system. This includes the ability to swipe from the left to switch apps, swipe from the right to reveal the Charms menu, and pull down from the top to close an application. Splashtop’s Win8 Metro Testbed is currently available for a promotional $24.99 in the iTunes App Store, whereafter it will sell for $49.99.

Zotac ZBOX Nano XS AD11 Plus mini PC launches with E-450 APU

Zotac ZBOX Nano XS AD11 Plus mini PC launches with E-450 APU

Galaxyneon-Zotac and its XBOXes — just when you think your next dorm room PC couldn’t get any smaller… it does. The latest in the stable is the long-winded Nano XS AD11 Plus, a hysterically titled small form factor PC equipped with a dual-core 1.6GHz AMD E-450 APU, Radeon HD 6320 GPU, 2GB of DDR3 memory and an HDMI output. There’s also a 64GB mSATA SSD, a pair of USB 3.0 sockets (as well as a couple of the USB 2.0 variety), a gigabit Ethernet jack and a bundled MCE-compatible remote. In a smattering of reviews that also cropped up alongside the box’s launch, we’ve learned that the E-450 moderately bests the prior E-350 rigs and soars past similarly equipped Atom-based machines; the mSATA SSD is perhaps the biggest upgrade, however, easily helping the system as a whole feel far faster than those with mechanical hard drives. Hot Hardware was pleased with the overall showing, though they did note that the include USB WiFi adapter gave ‘em headaches when trying to stream high-bitrate content from a NAS / home server. Worth the $359?

Google demos Coreboot on Chromebook prototype, hints at Ivy Bridge support

Google demos Coreboot on Chromebook prototype, hints at Ivy Bridge support

Galaxyneon-Well what do we have here? The good people over at Netbooknews spotted this Samsung Chromebook prototype at IDF Beijing 2012. Better yet, Google was using the machine to demo Coreboot — a fast boot open source BIOS replacement for Linux systems — after recently adding support for Intel’s Ivy Bridge platform to the project. Are Coreboot-enabled Ivy Bridge-based Chromebooks on the way? We’ll have to wait until Google I/O to find out. In the meantime, there’s a video waiting for you after the break — come on, we know you’re secretly big Chromebook fans just like us!

HTC One X gets unofficial power management fix, boosts battery life 10 to 20 percent

HTC One X gets unofficial power management fix, boosts battery life 10 to 20 percent

Galaxyneon-Somewhere along mike1986′s development of Android Revolution HD, a custom ROM for the HTC One X, he found that something amiss with the smartphone’s stock system — its Tegra 3 power management software didn’t function properly. According to the developer, an app known as NvCPLSvc.apk was misplaced in the /system/bin folder, rather than its proper destination of /system/app. Along with the custom ROM, mike1986 has released the fix as a separate bundle, which is detailed in the source below.
To apply the patch, users must push the new APK to their handset via ADB, and then alter the file’s permissions. Unless you’re seriously hindered by your phone’s battery life, however, it seems safe to wait for an official update from HTC. On the upside, users report a battery life increase in the neighborhood of 10 to 20 percent once with the fix in place, and we can only hope that all users will soon benefit from similar gains.

Google’s Advice to Avoid Android Apps Permission Prompt Message Problem on Android Phones

Written By Galaxyneon on Jumat, 13 April 2012 | 23.50

Jumat, 13 April 2012

Mobile phones that have the Android operating system on them are susceptible to permission violations. While all apps seem quite safe, there are some that may include permissions to allow other servers to obtain data from the device. As Google works on finding a way to prevent this situation for occurring, there are some things that Android mobile phone users can do to help with this problem.

Android devices will provide alerts with what permissions will be given when the downloaded app is installed. There are some red flags to look for when trying to discern which apps may be asking for too much permission. Most apps that are downloaded will ask for permission to access the internet. This is fairly normal request. However, be wary when the app request permission to access either phone calls or messages. Often these apps can be loaded with malware that want to place calls or send messages. They could be placing these calls or sending these messages to numbers that will cost you big bucks. Really there are very few apps that need this kind of permission. Security apps should be given access to your phone calls and messages in order to protect your phone. Other apps would include communication apps specifically designed by Google, such as Google Voice. If any other app asks for your permission to access your messages of phone calls, do not download it.
If you are suspicions about a particular app, you can obtain further information before downloading it. From Google play, it is quite easy to email the app’s developer. If the developer of the app cannot tell you why certain permissions are needed for the app to operate on your Android mobile phone, then you should reconsider downloading it. It is much better to err on the side of caution than download a device which could mine your phone for data.

Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W – Touch Screen Interface Control PC Review

he new touch-PC from Sony is all set to give a solid competition to the competitors. The Sony VAIO VPC-231FXW Touch Computer does not feature any new concept but rather provides the best bundle of the features and options. The PC boasts of a brighter screen of 24 inches, which has almost become standard size for the Touch PCs. The screen is very good for viewing the video and it can be even used for the video editing purpose, which can be a suitable use of this PC.

  • On the processor side, it is a bit lean, with just an Intel Core i3 CPU, which can bother some people but as far as functionality is concerned, it is minimum that the market has to offer, at least at this price point.
  • Moving towards the storage, the PC has an ample space of 1TB, again not a jaw-dropper space in itself as many rivals are offering 2TB or more. However, the hard disk can be upgraded with internal or external one.
  • The design that the system has is also good from the aesthetic as well as the durability point of view. The peripherals are suited to match the style of the PC.
Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W Accessories Details:
The wireless mouse and keyboard combo go well with the PC and integrate into the system. The system has many rave reviews for the tech reviewers around the globe.
Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W Screen Details:
The screen is not that well angled to give you the perfect touch-PC experience. This may be a deal breaker for a few as you expect to do the stuff on the touch panel rather than by typing. The screen can be angled up to 30 degrees, which may be adequate for people though. Apart from the screen angle, other things are fine with the screen. The response of the touch is good and gives you a nice tactile feel to it. The screen is anti-glare type, has a wide viewing angle, and projects a clear image with a 1920x1080 pixels, giving a Full HD resolution.
Sony VAIO VPC-L231FX/W Bundled Software Details:
It is evident from the package that the PC is meant towards the amateur to semi-professional Video-editors/Filmmakers, with bundles SONY software suites. The software includes the video editing software Vegas and the audio creation software Acid pro & sound forge. The final videos can be anything from the cell phone size to the Full HD size, or even larger. It can be used for DVD-creation or internet based distribution. It reminds of another shortcoming, the absence of a Blue-ray player. There are many other free and licensed programs as well in the bundled suite. You shall get Touch pack, Office, Skype and other software’s. You shall also get a 30-day subscription of Norton. Well, that can be equivalent to not giving it at all, as you can get the 30-60 day trial on the internet as free download. Apart from the software’s, it is solid even on the hardware front. You get USB 3.0, which is still not available in all the systems form, other manufacturers, along with fire wire and Wi-Fi.

DIY Turntable Photography Project

Galaxyneon -  A picture is a great way to show off a product, you can even take some pictures of the back and sides so the potential purchaser can see the product from other angles. How can you improve on this? Why not take pictures all around the item and play it like a 360 video. That is exactly what our friend Muris did. Check out his DIY Turntable Photography Project where he made a rotary turntable where you place an item, a camera is setup so that it can be remote triggered and some custom computer software controls the action. It is based on this system, you can see a typical example of the results he will get here.
If someone is interested in the project and would like to lend a hand translating the program into English I am sure Muris would appreciate the help!
“After entering the number of required photos (usually 30-40 is enough for a smooth animation), the application will calculate how many steps it needs to make and the process can start. As the camera is making pictures, they automatically appear at the bottom of the application (the white space) and after the process completes, a single click will copy all photos from that session to a custom directory. This allows a certain amount of automation especially when you need to photograph many products in series.”

Justice Department formally charges Apple, big five publishers in e-book price fixing case

Justice Department formally charges Apple, big five publishers in e-book price fixing case

Galaxyneon - The Justice Department has formally decided to sue Apple, Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillian, Penguin and Simon & Schuster over alleged e-book price-rigging. Apple and Macmillian have already denied any wrongdoing, saying that the agreements were enhancing competition in an industry previously dominated by Amazon. The case centers around a deal to switch to agency pricing, where the vendor takes a 30 percent cut of each sale rather than the wholesale model which allows stores to sell books at rock-bottom prices. It was previously believed that the publishers had cut back-room deals with the Government agency after bowing to pressure to withdraw Cupertino’s “favored nation” status. If successful, the DoJ will allow Amazon and Barnes and Noble amongst others to return to the wholesale model to sell best-sellers at a loss, something that the big five are desperate to avoid, and will look to fight the battle in court. The PDF of the DoJ’s filing is available online  it makes for fascinating reading.

Temperature and Humidity Meter using an Arduino and Sensirion SHT11 Sensor

Galaxyneon - This Temperature and Humidity Sensor Project was built by Dave from Plastibots. The project was made to determine if Dave and his wife needed a new humidifier. Instead of going to Home Depot and purchasing a humidity meter he did what any resourceful geek would do, he built his own meter. This meter is probably more accurate than most store bought devices also thanks to the  Sensirion SHT11 sensor that is used. The small Arduino is used to read the data from the sensor and display the results on a tiny screen. You can make your own by using the code that is also available here.
“The key to the accurate humidity / temp readings is the Sensirion SHT11 sensor.  It’s tiny – really tiny.   There are 4 connections: 3.3V- 5V, GND, Data, CLK.  In order to protect the sensor, it has been mounted to the side of the unit inside a clear plastic housing.  The housing has a hole in the side to allow air to flow freely, but limits the any water that might find its way in there”
